FRANKLIN, N.H. — The City of Franklin has banned a synthetic marijuana substance that has been a recent source of concern.Monday night, the Franklin City Council voted unanimously for a ban on K2, and restricting sales of any similar substances, according to Mayor Ken Merrifield.
The herb had been legally sold in smoke shops and some convenience stores in New Hampshire, and is commonly known as K2 or Spice.It’s clearly labeled as not for human consumption. Police said people are smoking it and some are ending up at emergency rooms with hallucinations, rapid heartbeats delete commas and other problems. There is now a bill in Concord to ban the herbal incense in the state. The Drug Enforcement Administration has already made it illegal to possess or sell the five chemicals used to make K2. The federal ban is for one year, while the government considers regulations on the product.Monday night, the Franklin City Council had a public hearing on the ordinance to ban K2 that had been drafted by the city solicitor.State Rep. Dennis Reid and school board chairwoman Kathy Russo both spoke in favor. No one spoke against it.
